I launched the MVP of my trivia site last night and I'm very encouraged. In a nutshell, I'm running trivia games with cash prizes for the winners.Last night I had 26 participants in my first game! 26 people all paid $1 to participate in "Seinfeld trivia", with that prize money split amongst the top three entrants.I'm not going to take a cut of any of the bets, but instead, simply ask for winners to give the platform a tip to help us run operations. And that's where the $3 came from.Some lessons learned:it's okay for processes to be manual at the start. I'm not skilled enough to build payments right into the website so I'm just having people venmo their $1 entry fee. I'm also manually uploading the questions and then updating the website manually to launch the game.Just because people have an opinion doesn't mean they are right. I posted this idea on this sub and other subs related to startups. Got a lot of nasty comments including my favorite which said this idea was worse than "soup tubes".there are going to be unforeseen problems that you will just have to deal with. And that's okay. When I first started building this I wanted to make the trivia questions multiple choice, but found it was difficult to build something like that on a basic platform like wix (I know it sucks, but I find it easy to build so it's a good product for MVPs). Instead I just decided to have people type their answers into a general text box. Not ideal because I'm going to have to make judgment calls based on spelling errors, but hey, Jeopardy has to deal with the same issue in final Jeopardy.it's not always about the money right away. Obviously $3 isn't going to buy me any mansions, but I do feel like it's validated my idea. If 26 people are willing to sign up, why not 260, or 2600 or more! Like they say, the only way to eat an elephant is one bite at a time. Last night I took the first bite.Finally, for anybody who's put ideas out into the world and got negative feedback, don't give up.
