I've been fixing computers since I was in middle school. Over the years I always had trouble finding customers to repair computers and barely made anything. One day I went on eBay and bought several broken laptops to fix and sell them locally through FB Marketplace, Offerup, Craigslist, etc.The majority of them made profit and I doubled the money I started with, and I invested even more, buying both locally and on eBay. It became very successful, where I would make $50-150 profit per laptop (some in the $200's!). These are laptops that are missing HDD's, RAM, etc. and I would buy good used HDD's in bulk (and test them thoroughly) install a fresh copy of Windows (usually 7 but now I put 10 since 7 is no longer supported). I'm confident in what I do and compared to most of my competition, I offer something important: Warranty and Support. Anytime someone has an issue, I always help them out. Most of my customers are happy and by putting up so many laptops on FB I get people asking if I fix them too so it's gotten me the customers I needed all along.I know how to deal with people, how to explain things to them and yes while I get the typical low-ballers, time-wasters, I have no trouble selling the majority of them. I also build PC's with used parts and sell those as full setups (monitor, keyboard, mouse) as well as your regular desktops of all varieties from Optiplexes to All-in-One's. With my gaming PC's I do cash + trades. For example, for an $800 PC I would take $600 + their old PS4 which I would resell for $150-200. Sometimes I would get their old laptops and desktops and make more than the original asking price! The problem...Now I want to scale up and open up an actual computer shop but there's one big thing that has been seriously bugging me the last few days:Licensing. The majority of Windows 10 PC's I sell have Windows 10 and quite a few of them have been activated using their old Windows 7 keys on their stickers. From what I read (on MS forums and most sites) they said it's perfectly legal to do that, yet here in SpiceWorks: https://ift.tt/32l2Khz say it's not "properly licensed" even though they activate perfectly, since the free period expired in 2016. I only found out about this several days ago. I'm not pirating them or using any sort of activator. I keep reading there that you need a new license key to upgrade them to 10 and that's just not feasible for these laptops especially when they have perfectly good keys on them. I'm so confused and honestly quite scared. I don't know what to do, and I want to run a legal business. I'm just a guy fixing and flipping PC's from his home right now and it's my main income source. I'm terrified I'm gonna get audited or sued or something now. I don't wanna end up like this dude that got 15 months in prison (though in all fairness he did something I'd never do): https://ift.tt/34vizoP on the new info I found, this leaves me with these legal options:- Buy new retail license keys for the lovely price of $140 each for home, $200 for Pro. That's MORE than what I sell these laptops for! I'd have to price my affordable $150 laptops for $300!- Leaving their original OS (Windows 7) which is unsupported and not in demand anymore.- Selling them with Windows 10 inactivated (which from what I read is also illegal)- Microsoft Refurbisher Program, which apparently is ending this year and I have no way to sign up for it. That program would've allowed me to get keys for MUCH more reasonable prices ($15-25 a piece).- Microsoft Authorized Program. I don't sell 1000 PCs a month. How am I even supposed to get close to that level if I have to pay for a $140 key for EACH one?So what am I supposed to do then? This has been giving me anxiety, especially the times we've been living on and I don't know what to do. This business is literally all I have right now, and I planned on registering it and opening up a shop next year if COVID improves.Anyone who's an expert on this who can offer advice would be really appreciated or who can I talk to? What subreddit should I post to? Any input would really help right now, I'm stressed and I can't sleep!TL DR; Made lots of money flipping/repairing PC's for years, want to open up shop, but terrified that Microsoft is gonna sue me or get me to jail over upgrading windows 7 PC's to 10 see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
