Should seniority be a definitive factor in a higher salary, or should we switch to merit pay?

Salary progression and the importance of your age have confused me when it comes to acquiring money. I believe the way salaries progress over time at the same employer is broken. While I agree there is nuance to the matter, why should an older colleague who delivers bad results get paid much more than a younger employee who works day in and day out? What do you think? Do we agree that seniority should not play such a big role, and that merit pay is a good alternative? If so, is it possible to change the status quo? Or do you disagree? I wrote an article on this to elaborate on my musings, so whether you agree or disagree, I'd love to hear your thoughts! see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
