Has anyone bought land and just held it for 20 plus years?

I'm not talking about a rental property, I'm talking about buying land outside a suburb of a large city, and just holding it for decades until homes start being built in the area?Given that real estate is limited, and we have a housing crisis, and our population is about to increase, is this a good investment? If what they say is true about global warming, land will be even more profitable, if yours isn't under water.Downsides: would be property taxes, squatters (would likely buy in a red state, so I can get them out easier), and potential asshole neighbors.What am I overlooking? I live in a city, and I don't know anyone who has done this. All the property owners I know own townhouses and condos, but the barrier is too high to enter for me. Majority also inherited their property. I'm fairly young so I could wait 20 to 40 years, I have time. What do you guys think? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
