How do students doing startups in college avoid IP issues while in school?

So my question is as mentioned above. How do people avoid issues with IP while they're creating their startup in school for both undergrad and graduate school? I want to consider both scenarios where the startup isn't related at all to any research the student is doing and the case where it's pretty close to their research work.I'm especially curious about how did Mark Zuckerberg get through this issue when he founded Facebook?Sorry if the post is a bit broad and somewhat vague, not sure if this is the right place to ask this question. see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
