I think that founders who are trying to raise and have limited VC network are missing the point. They take those generic fundraising courses that teach everything about the VC world, and not much about business development and sales. But let me explain first who I am and the reason behind this thought. After a few years spent in corporate (Google, Microsoft) I decided 8 years ago that startups are where I belong.I initially started as a Head of Sales for an IPOed Canadian eLearning startup, then moved into the C-Suite for another soon-to-be-IPO Middle Eastern startup.During my 2 years tenure as a Chief Revenue Officer (acting CEO, really), I have raised $8M in 1.5 years. We were 20 people when I joined, surviving badly with a $500k seed. That is when I decided to raise: $4M first, and another $4M a year later. We eventually became a $100M company and built the "Square" of the Middle East. The process of fundraising wasn't a walk in the park, but it was not as difficult as I expected. One of the most underestimated skill by founders who fundraise is "Sales".And copywriting. My sales background helped me big time. And it made me realize that you don't need to be a former PWC Auditor or a Senior Financial Controller at EY to ace fundraising. The dynamics of generating investor meetings from scratch recalled my early days as a business developer (basically a cold caller).Lots of Sales Linkedin Navigator, lots of emails bought and a lot of cold outreach. The email pitch needs to be on point and you will need superior copywriting and lead research skills.Don't send the exact same email to 100 VCs (I did that at first). Send 10, but highly targeted and customized. It takes time, but your response rate goes to the roof. Then it's all about managing your pipeline, training for your pitch to then finally mastering negotiations. If you guys are thinking of dipping your toes into the world of VC-backed startups, happy to help. Just DM me and I'll share what I know.Shameless plug: after quitting my last startup I have built Funden AI to help startup founders find and contact their ideal investor.
