Help in Growing a University Social Media App

Hey guys,So me and a few students will be building a social media app for our university - later we plan to scale to others. The app has unique features which are not present in any current social media app (I won't go into details). How would you guys approach this from the marketing side and to convince students to join the app knowing the competition out there? Maybe some of you have tried this and failed?
