Is it bad practice to ask if any employees can quit?

Like if you have 6 employees but can only financially support 5, is it bad practice to get them all together explain the situation and see if any of them want to/are willing to quit so that I don't have to let go of one of them? No point in firing someone if it turns out somebody else was going to be leaving soon or was willing to go in the first place. I don't want to let go of the wrong person. Is this just something you don't do and you have to just deal with the consequences of firing someone? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
