Sell an idea vs building a business?

Hello all, I’m new hear and I’ve tried to see this has been asked before and I couldn’t find anything. Sorry if it is a repeat.So I have this idea that I’m in the process of prototyping. I think it could do really well in my target audience. Under the assumption that it is a product people want, is it worth selling the idea/prototype to a larger company? Under the stated assumption, it would be more profitable to start a small business and then maybe sell the business down the road. But I don’t know if I want to go though the start up grind, at least not right now.So how does one sell a prototype/IP, assuming I have a patent?
