How are there so many (tech) startups that don't seem to have a clear path towards monetization?

I have a strong business background and continuously run into small tech startups that offer interesting solutions to problems people may face, whether it's an app or a plug-in or web tool... for free. Despite adding value, I don't see how people would be willing to pay for these solutions or, in some cases, how the business could even monetize at all. These are not fly-by-njght operations, but are teams of 5-10 full time people founding or working at these startups, with funding behind them. What is driving people to take the risk, time, and energy to work full time on these projects and what are these venture firms seeing to provide funding to these enterprises?I've stopped several entrepreneurial projects at various early stages once there was a realization that monetization was extremely challenging if not impossible, despite being great products/resources/ideas... time and money are valuable. How are there so many people seemingly doing otherwise? What am I missing?Summary: As someone with a strong business background, I'm struggling to see how many small tech startups can monetize and what drives people to start said businesses, work at them, or fund them without seemingly clear paths to monetization? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
