How does private government service alternative work?

SpaceX is a private NASA, FedEx is a private postal service. If people are already getting mail delivered for free with their taxes, or rendering a service for "free" form the gov, how could a private business which would require payment compete? idk how the mail system works. How does a private NASA (spaceX) work? why would spacex even start or become so profitable when NASA, a gov sector, already exists?I realize these are dumb questions, but I'm trying to understand how this works and how you could potentially make a spin off of a government provided service, profit, and potentially send/rent it off to the government. see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
