Learn how to make an online business website the right way.So as I continue to experience the ups and downs of operating a small business, I’ve decided to share some of the information I have gleaned from my time creating and operating businesses. Currently I’m working on probably the biggest project I’ve ever had, and I’m rather excited about it. Therefore I think it’s as good a time as any as I develop this to share. When I launch the website I will make a separate post.So, here are some golden rules I’ve found of website making!Make it fast. No, not “just fill out this form and you’ll be out!”What I mean is that if you have to go through hours of extra effort to figure out a system where you save your customers credit card information for the next purchase simply so they are less inconvenienced, you do it. Quality is important still, but quality is nothing compared to being quick when it comes to making money. A good thing to look at is amazon. No matter what you want, you can look it up, find a good price, and in a few clicks you’ve got it. No negotiating with a seller, no asking for some special subscription. It already has your address and pay info. That is the kind of speed you want. If it takes more than 6 clicks, that’s too many.If you are using a design template, be unique!!!So often I will find websites that are incredibly generic. I’m going to be brutally honest, a good website that will make you money is going to require a while to develop. You want it unique. You want it recognizable. I’m talkin’ consistent themes, clean user interface, the whole shebang. Don’t use a free template, and if you do make sure that by the end it is almost unrecognizable. A customer is going to appreciate something different. It makes you stand out as something special, something that will deliver. Your presentation is second only to speed in my opinion, and should take up a large portion of your work. Personally, I create my own websites with the Bootstrap coding library, but trust me if it’s not something you want to commit to then do not put yourself through learning it, especially if you don’t know code beforehand.A good general rule of thumb is to make sure the visual aspect of the website is simplistic compared to the product. If it’s too busy then it draws away from what you want to sell, and that’s no good. Also, try and put a picture of yourself somewhere, a nice and professional one. People like having a face to tie to a product, it makes it more trustworthy feelingSpend time on your logo!You want something short, sweet, and unique. Personally I wouldn’t tie your name into it, because the focus should be on whatever you’re selling. Make it relevant, puns are usually safe bets in my opinion. Ultimately the name of the business and it’s logo are up to something that you think will represent the business as a whole. Make sure that representation is something good. More than anything it will be the face of your business. If it takes a while to come up with something, that’s A okay! It’s a big decision, and one that you make sure you put good though into. Something I’d do when toying around with ideas is hop into google draw and just mess around with things... see what design idea caught my attention. Then, when I figured that out, I’d hop into GIMP (an image editing program) and spend the day making something nice and clean looking.If you aren’t good at digital design, that is alright! Look online for some inspiration. Don’t steal anything of course, but don’t be afraid to give yourself some inspiration. Worse comes to worse, it’s not that great but obviously had lots of thought and effort put into it. I can tell you right now that that has way more value than something cobbled together after an hour of thinking and slapped on like a bad bumper sticker.Have you noticed a theme? If you haven’t it’s okay, for some people it’s natural because you already recognize that it’s a part of business. For any aspiring business owners out there, you likely would have felt it. You know what I’m talking about. The cold creep of dread as you process the amount of work you’ll have to do to make a good and effective website.A good website and system will take a lot of work to get up and running. An Etsy store made in a day is a dime a dozen. A business is not. An online business is just like a physical one, it takes lots of blood sweat and tears.I am not going to say you should be scared away though. Frankly if you want to be an online business owner one day, you should make sure that you at least try to put some real elbow grease into something. Make it a personal project. Worst comes to worst it doesn’t work out, but know what? The beauty of online business is that it’s much easier to make a venture very low risk. You can learn so much more from trying hard and crashing than not trying at all and getting nowhereUltimately, you’ve got this! It’s overwhelming, but trust me, it’s worth it.
