How does a new company aquire the advanced technology which bigger companies keep a secret?

I have not even graduated school so what I ask might be dumb. So let's say I'm trying to make a product. Now it would definatley be the best choice to already expand on current technologies advanced by the bigger companies. The only problem is when the company advances a bit, they most probably keep it secret. If so, how am I suppose to expand on the existing tech, if most of it is kept secret by the big shots? Like if I decide to use modern AI in my product, where will I access the existing tech to expand on if it's all kept secret? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
