I feel like I’m trapped in a vicious loop

So I’ve been trying to get my startup off the ground for 3 years now and honestly, I’m failing miserably. Basically one of the co-founders was our mechanical engineer; he was supposed to design and build the product. Well a year into out startup he opted out and left the rest of us high and dry. We tried to build the product ourselves, and we actually succeeded. We built a functioning prototype after months of trials and mistakes. We tried to move forward and get a patent, being poor college students we couldn’t afford to hire a lawyer so we found a pro-bono organization that’s supposed to help young entrepreneurs with patent legal work. The lawyer they paired us with basically said there was nothing we could patent, since our product was built basically from stuff you could buy at Home Depot and Target and we didn’t actually invent anything. So we’ve need an engineer to get our patent, but we need our patent before we can go to investors and ask for the money we need to hire an engineer. I’m tired, frustrated and angry. No idea what to do at this point. see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
