Just thought I'd share with the group. My wife (28) was recently diagnosed with a rare dental condition called "Root Resorption". Basically, she's having an autoimmune response to her teeth and will need all of her teeth removed and replaced within the next year. We have excellent insurance (she works at a university) but as many may know, dental insurance covers next to nothing. We're looking at a $40k bill out of pocket to pay for the very unpleasant procedure of 28 tooth extractions and full dental implants.2 years ago when I was still an engineer, this would have really sucked. We would have needed to resign ourselves to extreme frugality and to postpone a lot of home and life projects. Now I'm a self-employed blacksmith and knifemaker. Compared to my fixed-salary corporate job, I have the ability to work harder and longer to cover these costs with minimal impact to our goals. I can flex my hours so I can go with her to the procedures and be able to take care of her during recovery.I can choose my priorities as I need to and ensure my family is taken care of, without being beholden to a larger organization who pays me a fraction of what my labor and skills are worth. This sucks, but it would suck a lot more if I was a cog in someone else's machine. see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
