How are the business owners here dealing with sick days during the pandemic?

A few days ago Ontario finally caved to months of pressure and announced a paid sick days program. And the overwhelming reaction is that is has fallen flatly, and squarely, on its face.Let's get into the details.IT'S NOT COMPLICATED, IT'S ALSO NOT MUCHOntario will now cover up to $200/day if you need to miss work for any of the following reasons:going for a COVID teststaying home awaiting the results of a COVID testbeing sick with COVID (umm duh)going to get vaccinated (yay!!)experiencing a side effect from a COVID vaccinationhaving been advised to self-isolate due to COVID by an employer, medical practitioner or other authoritytaking care of a dependent who is:sick with COVIDself isolating due to COVIDA doctors note is not needed in order to qualify. If an employee takes their three days (and they need not be consecutive), their employer is required to pay them their wage for the day, up to a maximum of $200. So if you make more than $200/day in your job, too bad, you're probably rich enough anyhow to survive, is what we read between the lines here. 🤷‍♂️It is then the requirement of the employer to get reimbursed from the Ontario government. How and where you ask? Well, unfortunately that hasn't been released yet. But the thinking is probably through the WSIB program somehow?If you need more than 3 days (and ummm.... the requirement is to isolate for 14 days if you have COVID so.....), you then as the employee have to apply for the Canada Recovery Sickness Benefit. Which is $500 for one week.GOOD TRY, (BUT DID FORD REALLY TRY...?)For those who aren't aware, southern Ontario is the dumpster fire of COVID in Canada currently. Cases just finally dropped under 4,000/day. The lockdowns, especially in the Toronto area, have been fierce. Restaurants have been closed for over 300 days since the pandemic began.However, the data shows the lockdowns are going after the wrong places. According to the Toronto Star, 69% of outbreaks are occurring in warehouses, distribution facilities, construction sites, food processing plants and even offices.These environments see larger number of employees in tighter spaces, working together. The ability for transmission is high. They are also lower paying jobs with people who can't afford to go on long sick leaves.3 days isn't going to cut it. This is why the outbreaks keep growing. Until people are properly compensated for staying away, they're going to continue not staying away. It's simple economics for them.I guess get out the marshmallows because Ontario will continue to burn at this rate, unless more heroes like Peel Region step up and force the isolated shutdowns of facilities that have an outbreak, well below the provincial threshold. But it sure would be nice if these people who keep the economy, and all of our businesses, going, were helped out.-------------------Thanks a ton for making it this far!
