How did Youtube get traffic in its early days?

How did Youtube grow to what it is today? What was the process?I assume in the beginning this website was unknown and the founder uploaded some video of him on the zoo to show his friends. But I doubt they didn't have any intention for it to grow big. How did they grow their traffic and customer base? In the beginning this unknown website had probably very little content and there was no real incentive for people to upload content or even visit the site, am I right? Who was the big competitor to Youtube back then that overshadowed them? What made people choose to upload videos and visit Youtube suddenly? How did they market themselves? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
