Attention is a rare commodity. Or at least that’s what I’ve come to learn in the last couple of months. I’m making a big change to my marketing strategy, one that will hopefully solve my chicken and egg double sided platform problem.Hi, I’m a 29 year old currently unsuccessful web app developer from Perth, Australia.I’ve spent the last couple of months building and testing an app that is all about promoting local businesses by way of easy to access deals. The platform is free to use for both customer segments - businesses and customers.I’ve had a grand total of 0 people sign up despite some earnest (probably misguided) attempts at promotion. The only bit of feedback I’ve received has been, quite literally, a simple “Your app sucks”.Build it and they will come:Or maybe they won’t. Really, they probably won’t. Attention is worth a lot on the internet (or at least that's my opinion). With it, your company can (and most likely will) prosper. Without it, your company is more likely to flounder. The thing I’m learning is: I don’t deserve attention! Just because I’ve spent so long building the app does not mean it deserves the attention of everyday consumers and businesses. Attention is something that has to be earned by way of a multitude of different marketing strategies, that's what I'm coming to realize. My idea isn't exactly revolutionary, it will take more than just the mere existence of the app to get people excited and participating.Chicken and the egg:I’m in a bit of a tough spot... I need businesses on the platform posting deals to attract users, and I need users to attract businesses. I need to build a chicken and an egg.Changing things up a bit:I’m actually going to set my web app back to private and present to the public two landing pages. One for users and another for businesses. This way I can build a user base and attract businesses wanting exposure. Attracting users will be done with a landing page and a mixture of free and paid traffic. With respect to businesses, I’m thinking an in person, pounding the pavement kind of deal. Talking directly with shop/business owners, highlighting the potential benefits of the platform. So that’s it. My new strategy. Cultivating a chicken and egg simultaneously while earning the attention of potential users by way of a multiplicity of marketing strategies. Business is hard, getting attention is hard, but I love the challenge. As a very famous man (almost) once said (forgive me): “We choose to [develop a business] in this decade and do the other things, not because they are easy, but because they are hard, because that goal will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills, because that challenge is one that we are willing to accept, one we are unwilling to postpone, and one which we intend to win, and the others, too.”If you have any advice on getting an app off the ground (so to speak) please let me know. Any help would be greatly appreciated! see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
