Why is tik tok and social media a thing?

**This may be a bit of a silly question but I am genuinely curious*\*Hey all, I've seen that people (teenagers specifically) have been having all sorts of mental and physical problems with the use of tik tok and other social media. My question, as stated in the title is, why? They aren't required to use these platforms so why do they use them? They're only harming themselves by following those type of pages. The situation sounds similar to dropping a rock on your own foot, like the only person who is going to be harmed by either dropping it or not dropping it is you, so please let me know as I am genuinely curious.Edit: For those who'll say "why are you using reddit, it's the same thing?" I can control what I see on here by going on specific subs. As far as I am concerned, reddit doesn't cause the physical problems that platforms like Tik Tok has, especially in teenage girls. see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
