How do social media companies "start" with venture capital?

I was reading up on tech giants such as twitter and Facebook, and the articles constantly say they were only able to build up off of venture capital investments of millions in their seed stage. But for a venture capital to invest in you wouldn't you already need to have a working product with users? Or at the very least a beta version? Since even very simple social media platforms cost upwards of 100,000 today to get started, how did these companies secure funding to get the product? Is this a case of the chicken or the egg? Like, you cant make Facebook without a few hundred thousand but you cant get a few hundred thousand without Facebook. How do they get through the massive initial invesment? see hubwealthy.com/wealthy
